WARE SHOALS — After allowing an early touchdown from Hunter-Kinard-Tyler, the Ware Shoals Hornets took control of the game to advance to the second round of the Class 1A state playoffs with a 20-12 win Friday night.

The Trojans took a 6-0 lead in the first quarter and held onto it until the second quarter.

In the second quarter, the Hornets tied the game with a touchdown from Isaiah Wideman. It took three more possessions before the Hornets were able to take the lead. Jake Calvert completed the touchdown pass to Dana Givens to put the Hornets up 13-6.

The Hornets’ Myles Nelson led the defense with an interception in the third quarter. Neither team was able to score during the third quarter.

“Myles Nelson and Jake Calvert, who are sophomores, also stepped up and played a great game,” Ware Shoals coach Chris Johnston said.

Once the fourth quarter began, the Hornets were able to force a fumble, which led to a quarterback keeper from Calvert, and the Hornets took a 20-6 lead.

The Hornets’ defense was able to keep the Trojans to a turnover on downs on their next offensive drive. The Trojans were able to force the Hornets to punt. After six plays by the Trojans, Dalton Hawkins was able to intercept a pass to give the Hornets the ball back.

Ware Shoals then went four-and-out on their next drive, giving the ball back to the Trojans at their own 32. One play later, the Trojans scored the final touchdown of the game, leading to a 20-12 victory for the Hornets.

“I am proud of our kids for stepping up tonight. When our senior running back had to leave the game early in the first half, our kids stepped up and continued to play hard and won a hard-fought game. Isaiah Wideman, our junior defensive end and running back, stepped up and played his best game and broke a 49-yard run in the second quarter to give our kids a boost,” Johnston said.

“We are elated to have won a playoff game at home for the first time in 10 years. We must now regroup and prepare for a very good Lamar team,” Johnston said.

Ware Shoals takes on Lamar next Friday in the second round of the playoffs.
