I just read the summary of the Abbeville city council meeting that took place on May 19th. The last paragraph of the article nonchalantly states that there was approval to rename a street in honor of Martin Luther King, Jr. This is huge! Abbeville is the birthplace of the Confederacy, as Secession Hill testifies. Although, very late in coming, this action is truly a step in the right direction. Removing or altering monuments do not thrill me, as we cannot change history. This action by Abbeville city council, however, sends a true message of reconciliation. I am so proud of Abbeville! I hope the leaders of Greenwood will have the same courage to honor this great American. By the way, Index Journal, this should have been the headline instead of the last paragraph.
