More than 1,000 part-time Lidl employees will be eligible to purchase company health insurance plans starting Jan. 1, officials announced Tuesday.

The policy will pertain to 1,200 workers at 70 Lidl stores nationwide, including its Greenwood location.

“We want our team to have the peace of mind knowing they have healthcare coverage,” Lidl U.S. chairman Roman Heini said in a statement. “Giving team members working part-time at Lidl access to medical benefits is incredibly important and it will help them succeed.”

Lidl opened its Greenwood site in September 2017, making it the company’s fifth South Carolina property.

Executives said Lidl expects to spend up to $9 million in the first year of its health insurance initiative, which will offer medical, dental and vision benefits. The next open enrollment period will be in November.

Lidl operates 10,800 stores and is active in 32 countries, employing about 287,000 employees globally.
