It’s hard to resist a pork chop on a stick.

As the hearty loins were being heaped into a tinfoil lined container at the Greenwood County fairgrounds Wednesday evening — alongside oversized turkey legs and jumbo servings of lemonade — 2-year-old Layton Jackson, atop a white fiberglass horse in mid-bray, enjoyed a trip around the carousel.

Such moments of instant wistfulness spread across the broad field, dotted with carnival rides, traveling games and lots of unhealthy food, and are ripe for the taking through Sunday, when the 22nd annual Greenwood Fair rides out of town until next autumn.

A key addition to this year’s slate is Lisko Family Midways, an Ohio-based amusement company that brought new rides to the grounds.

Gates are open today from 5 to 11 p.m., Friday from 5 p.m. to midnight, Saturday from 9 a.m. to midnight and Sunday from 2 p.m. “until.”

Friday and Saturday will feature a motocross race.
