Josh Norman 1

Greenwood native Josh Norman, a cornerback for the Washington Redskins, does a walk-through of the Emerald High School gymnasium in May ahead of a charity basketball game he hosted through his Starz24 foundation.

Over the course of his 5 ½-year career, Josh Norman has racked up 10 takeaways.

But off the field, the star cornerback and Greenwood native is known for what he gives away.

And he’s continuing that trend this holiday season. On Wednesday, Norman took out a full-page ad in the Index-Journal asking area churches to submit a list of materials they need to benefit youths in their congregations.

“This season, God has laid it on my heart as a servant of the crown to reach out and touch every church in Greenwood, SC with my tithes and offering of love and peace,” Norman wrote. “It is my wish that everyone in your place of worship be touched by this blessing and I’ve been blessed by and now giving unto you.”

In October, Norman donated $100,000 to Puerto Rico for relief efforts after the U.S. colony was devastated by a hurricane. Last year, Norman gave $10,000 to six Greenwood churches.

Norman, 29, played for Greenwood High School and attended Coastal Carolina University before being drafted by the Carolina Panthers in the fifth round of the 2012 NFL Draft.

He signed a five-year, $75 million deal with Washington in April 2016.

In his ad, Norman asked for all requests to be delivered by Dec. 12 to 21300 Redskins Park Drive in Ashburn, Virginia. The ZIP code is 20147.

“I will read through each one and get back to you all respectfully. I truly thank you all from the bottom of my heart for being that beacon of hope to look up to and strive for greatness in your teachings and vessels on earth to reach our Father who is in heaven,” Norman wrote.

He ended the advertisement with a quote from Romans 12:13: “Share with the Lord’s people who are in need. Practice hospitality.”
