Students from Merrywood Elementary School and Laurens District 55 High School were honored at the South Carolina State Fair as winners of the Innovation Challenge on Saturday.

The Innovation Challenge, sponsored by IT-oLogy and the state Department of Education, is a statewide competition for students in grades 3-12 to use technology to come up with a solution or bring awareness to a problem in the community.

Madeleine Strong and Hannah Crooks of Merrywood Elementary in Greenwood County School District 50 got third place in the elementary category with their project, Humane Society Drive.

Jeffrey Carroll and Cody McWhorter of Laurens District 55 High in Laurens County School District 55 got second place in the high school category for their project, Digital Hall Pass.

"The jobs and careers available in our state and nation require graduates that are proactive hands-on learners that can apply their knowledge to solve real world problems," said State Superintendent Molly Spearman.
