Emerald’s girls cross country team repeated as region champions and the Vikings’ boys team finished third in the Region 3-3A meet Saturday at Connie Maxwell Farm.

Emerald’s girls cross country team won its second straight region championship Saturday in the Region 3-3A meet at Connie Maxwell Farm.

Zoe Vickery finished third for Emerald. Jo Beth Darby finished 10th for the Vikings, and Cierra Friez and Campbell Vickery finished 12th and 13th. Isabella Pruitt finished 31st.

The Vikings’ boys team took third in the region, finishing behind region champion Clinton and runner-up Woodruff.

The Vikings’ Thomas Rude finished fourth in the boys race. Matthew Hines finished fifth. Matthew Dalton finished 16th, Jose Alday finished 23rd and Brandon Martin finished 25th.

Vickery, Davis, Darby, Hines and Rude were named to the All-Region team for Emerald.

VARSITY GIRLS GOLFWare Shoals places 11th at stateWare Shoals finished in 11th place at the Class 3A/2A/1A state championship Tuesday at Hackler Golf Club in Myrtle Beach.

The Hornets recorded the best finish of any Class 1A team in the championship.

Ware Shoals shot an over-161 as a team and had a score of 737. Oceanside won the state title after shooting an over-six and posting a score of 582.

Ware Shoals senior Johnna Magaha finished tied for 12th with a score of 158. Channing Smith carded a 159.

Cassidy Childress finished tied for 66th place after posting a 199. Rachel-Beth Nix shot a 221 and Sam Busbin shot a 268.

COLLEGE WOMEN’S GOLFLander finishes 9th at Jekyll IslandJEKYLL ISLAND, Ga. – The Lander women’s golf team finished ninth overall to close out the Jekyll-O-Lantern Intercollegiate on Tuesday afternoon.

Caroline Hardee led the way for the Bearcats with a 13-over 157 to finish in a tie for 26th overall. Tatum Warr tied for 44th with a two-day total of 16-over 160, while Hannah Stephenson placed right behind Warr with a 17-over 161 to tie for 46th. Madison Jordan finished tied for 50th with a 19-over 163.

Marley Barefoot rounded out the Bearcat lineup tying for 58th with a 21-over 165.

COLLEGE MEN’S SOCCERLander 7, Lenoir-Rhyne 1Lander men’s soccer team used its highest-scoring performance of the season to defeat Lenior-Rhyne at Van Taylor Stadium.

Lander (9-3-2) jumped all over the Bears (7-8-1) early, scoring on its first two shots of the night. Harry Bircumshaw netted the night’s first goal just 50 seconds into the match and less than four minutes later, the Bearcats doubled the lead on a goal from Max McNulty.

The Bearcats added to their lead in the second half as Thibault Chretien put Lander up 3-1 in the 49th minute. Just 100 seconds later, Robbie Young found the back of the net to make the score 4-1. Max Bolton tallied a pair of goals in the 61st and 77th minutes and Brice Baillet scored his first goal of the season to cap the scoring on the night.
