1106 Martico Jackson

Abbeville running back Martico Jackson evades Saluda’s Tyleke Mathis during the Panthers’ 48-20 win against Saluda on Oct. 25.

Abbeville finished the season undefeated at 9-0 and has finished the regular season as the unanimous No. 1 team in the Class 2A.

The Panthers are one of three teams this season to spend the whole season at No. 1. Fellow defending state champions Dutch Fork and Myrtle Beach maintained the No. 1 ranking all season in Class 5A and Class 4A, respectively.

Abbeville is set to take on Lewisville Friday to start its campaign for a fifth consecutive state championship. Five state championships in a row have never been won in South Carolina.

Saluda received votes in Class 2A but dropped out of the poll since being ranked No. 7 last week. The Tigers lost to Batesburg-Leesville in the final game of the regular season.

Saluda dropped to third in Region 2-2A and will face Blacksburg at home in the first round of the playoffs.

Laurens, coached by Greenwood native Chris Liner, finished the season at No. 8 in Class 5A. Laurens won Region 1-5A and will face Blythewood, which earned the at-large bid, in the first round of the playoffs.

Chapman remained the top team in Class 3A.

McCormick was the only Lakelands team receive votes in Class 1A. The Chiefs will face Williston-Elko in the first round of the playoffs Friday. A win Friday will set up a second-round game against 10-0 Wagener-Salley, which is ranked No. 1 and received a first-round bye.
