The Lakelands jamboree circuit will continue today in Greenwood before closing Friday in McCormick.
Greenwood’s jamboree is scheduled for 6 p.m. at J.W. Babb Stadium and will feature six Lakelands teams, including a pair of teams that did not participate in last week’s WCTEL Kickoff Classic in Abbeville.
One of the top rivalries in the area will kick off the jamboree when Abbeville faces Ninety Six. McCormick will play Ware Shoals in a Region 1-1A preview in the second game, then Emerald will take on Fox Creek. Greenwood will close the preseason tournament against Strom Thurmond.
Abbeville beat Crescent 20-0 last week in the WCTEL Kickoff Classic. Ninety Six held off Newberry 19-8 and Emerald pummeled McCormick 20-0.
District 50 has implemented additional security measures that will require entrants to pass through a metal detector before entering J.W. Babb Stadium. A clear bag policy will also be enforced.
“We experienced it firsthand last year with our graduation (at Lander),” Greenwood High School principal Chad Evans said this week at a District 50 board meeting. “We had some concerns at first. ‘Oh gosh, it’s gonna back up the lines. We’re gonna have to tell people to come earlier.’ It worked perfect. We had lots of parents, students, other stakeholders tell us how much it meant to them.”
Gates will open two hours before kickoff to streamline the process.
McCormick will host the Region 1-1A jamboree Friday, which will feature the Chiefs, Calhoun Falls, Dixie, Ware Shoals and Whitmire, as well as Greenwood Christian. Kickoff is scheduled for 6 p.m.
Friday’s jamboree will also open with a rivalry game as Dixie is scheduled to take on Ware Shoals. Calhoun Falls will face Whitmire before Greenwood Christian squares off against McCormick.
The regular season for high school football teams around the state will start Aug. 17 with Week 0.
