Greenwood Christian fell to Hilton Head Christian 22-7 in the first round of the SCISA Class 2A playoffs.
The Hawks held one of the state’s most explosive offenses to 15 points until a late touchdown allowed Hilton Head to pull away.
Greenwood Christian controlled time of possession with some long drives. Several key fourth down stops by Hilton Head allowed it to limit the Hawks to one touchdown.
Seniors Brett Durham and Eli White led the Hawks in rushing. White scored the team’s only touchdown with a 1-yard run in the first quarter.
It was an emotional game for Greenwood Christian’s seniors, as they hoped to pull off the upset.
“I think this has been a good year for us overall,” senior Will Campbell said. “Everyone worked incredibly hard to make this season a success. I’m beyond proud of all our players who stepped up to make it happen. Although the outcome wasn’t what we wanted it to be, I believe we fully exceeded anyone’s expectations but our own. At the start of the season, nobody expected us to be any good because we lost so much talent from last year.
“It speaks volumes to the culture of our program for us to be able to continue to build success based off the love we have for each other, the effort we put into this team, and the relentless attitude of toughness we display every single Friday. That’s what we pride ourselves on and I couldn’t be more excited for the direction of this football program. The awesome part is we aren’t graduating. We are all brothers and will remain a part of this team forever. They will always have my support whether I’m wearing a uniform or not.”
