Ninety Six High School senior Saquon Garner, center, signs his letter of intent to play for Newberry College Wednesday with his mother Tabitha Marshall, left, and coach Mike Doolittle, right, behind him.

Described by Ninety Six football coach Mike Doolittle as “the most explosive” player he has ever coached, Saquon Garner will be playing for Newberry College in the fall.

Garner, a defensive end, signed his letter of intent Wednesday to play for Newberry College, where the Ninety Six High School senior said he’s looking to explore a major in computer science. His mother, Tabitha Marshall, stood with him Wednesday as he signed in the Ninety Six High School gym.

“He’s the most explosive guy I’ve ever coached -- and that’s 30 years worth,” Doolittle said. “He’s the fastest guy out of his stance. He’s got tailback speed to be a defensive end.”

Garner had 40 tackles in 2016, with 26 tackles for loss, seven sacks, two forced fumbles, a pass breakup and a field goal block. In October, he was named to the North squad of the Touchstone Energy Cooperatives North-South All-Star football roster.

When Garner joins the Newberry Wolves, he’ll play beside fellow Ninety Six High School graduate and outside linebacker Peyton Hite.
