The Greenwood Country Club will host the 14th annual Martin-Sims Golf Classic Oct. 19, sponsored by the family of Rudolph Sims Jr.
Sims played golf for Lander College in the 1970s after graduating from Greenwood High School. He started Sims Concrete of Greenwood, Inc. with his wife, Susan.
The tournament will also honor John Martin Jr., who graduated from Greenwood and Lander. Martin Jr. served as a physical education teacher, coach and athletic director for Brewer Middle School for 12 years.
There will be a morning start at 8:30 a.m. and an afternoon session beginning at 1:30 p.m. Breakfast will be served at 7:30 a.m. and lunch will be served at 11:30 a.m.
Each team consists of four players, who will play a captain’s choice format. Each team will be assigned a handicap, which will be based on the individual handicaps of the four players on the team and determined by using the formula recommended by the United States Golf Association for captain’s choice events.
The maximum individual handicap allowed will be 24.
All play will be net, in that each team’s handicap will be subtracted from its 18 hole gross score to determine the team’s 18-hole net score. The team with the lowest 18-hole net score will be the winner.
Male players will play the following tees: 54 and under, white tees; 55-64, gold tees; 65 and up, blue tees; all female players will play from the red tees.
The entry fee is $400 per team, and all proceeds will go to the Lander golf program.
