Michael Eugene “Monkey” Crawford, 63, resident of 163 Highland Drive, husband of Patricia Zink Crawford, died Monday, October 9, 2017 at Self Regional Medical Center.
Born in Ware Shoals, January 19, 1954, he was a son of the late Jack A. and Mattie Jean Cobb Crawford. Monkey was a 1972 graduate of Ware Shoals High School where he was an outstanding member of the Hornets football team, having been selected to All-State and All-Star Teams as defensive and offensive player. He was the president of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes Club and was voted by his classmates as “the wittiest.” He attended the Citadel where he was a member of the Citadel Bulldogs football team and was a 1977 graduate of Lander College.
He was retired from St. Paul Travelers Insurance Company as a Master Claims Adjuster for the Southeastern Region. A member of Our Lady Lourdes Catholic Church, he was also a member of the Knights of Columbus of the Church.
Surviving in addition to his wife of the home are two sons, Levi (Emily) Crawford of Norwood, NC and Jonathan Owen Crawford, of the home; two daughters, Ryan (Sebastian) Libertino of Landrum and Anna Marie Crawford of Charlotte, NC; a brother, Tommy (Allie) Crawford of Donalds and a sister, Debbie (Jimmy) Thompson of Due West; four grandsons, Wyatt Crawford, Michael Libertino, Matthew Crawford and Jack Libertino; his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Mike and Pat Zink of Greenwood; a special nephew, Russ Thompson.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be conducted at 1PM Thursday at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church with Rev. Father Timothy Tebalt officiating. Burial will follow in Greenwood Memorial Gardens. Friends are invited to A Celebration of Life at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Burnadette Hall immediately following the burial.
Active pallbearers will be Mike McWhorter, Lanny Meeks, Dan Branyon, Ralph Boyter, Babo Boyter, Jimmy Campbell, Jeff Knight and Stanley Henderson.
Honorary escort will be members of the Knights of Columbus along with the 1970-1974 members of the Ware Shoals High School Hornets Football Team.
The body is at Blyth Funeral Home where a prayer service will be conducted at 6:30 Wednesday evening. The family is at the home in Idlewood and will receive friends at the funeral home following the prayer service until 8:30PM.
