Melvene Estella Bowie

CALHOUN FALLS — Melvene Estella Bowie, 84, of 102 Florence St., Calhoun Falls, was born on July 13, 1934 in McCormick County, SC, to the late Gary and Lula Millen Lee.

On Thursday June 6, 2019, she peacefully departed this earthly life at her home surrounded by her loving family.

Melvene, widow of Ruben Bowie Sr. was a virtuous, phenomenal and loving woman of God, who prayed for her family and instilled in her children and grandchildren the importance of God and family.

She joined Rockford AME Church at an early age and was a faithful member until her health declined. There she served as Church School Teacher and secretary for Church School. She retired from Rocky River Plant after 30 years of service.

She leaves to cherish her memory daughters Geraldine (James) Cade of Calhoun Falls, SC, Beverly (Rev. James) Brownlee of Ware Shoals, SC, Bridgette (Johnny) Jones of Fayetteville, NC, Debbie (Terry) Wright of Lincolnton, GA, Valerie (Clifton Martin) Bowie of McDonough, GA; sons, Ruben (Lisa)Bowie Jr. of Abbeville, SC, Michael (Linda) Bowie of Iva, SC, Herman (Vivian) Bowie of Marietta, GA, and Waymon (Tarsha) Bowie Sr., of Lawrenceville, GA; five grandchildren reared in the home, Shaniqua (Kevin) Harp, Javen Bowie, La’Travia Lee, Nekeia Marina, Contessa Tate; a loving brother Otis (Mary) Lee of Greenville, SC; sisters-in-law, Georgia (Charlie) Jennings of McCormick, SC, and Zenobia Pearl Bowie of Virginia; brother-in-law, Solomon Bowie of Abbeville, SC, and Luscious (Amanda) of Philadelphia, PA. There are 26 grandchildren, 35 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild; a best friend Mary Leach of Calhoun Falls, SC, and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends to cherish her memories.

She was preceded in death by her siblings, Lula B. Hardman Redd, Essie T. Banks, James Thomas Lee, Quincy Lee, Clark Lee, Harvey Lee, Della Mae Jones, Johnny Lee, and Edward Lee.

Services are 1 pm, Saturday , June 15, 2019 at Flat Rock AME Church, Abbeville, SC, and burial at Rockford AME Church Cemetery, Mt. Carmel, SC. Public viewing will be Friday June 14, 2019 from 1-7 pm. The family is at the home.
