Joseph Joe Gentry Sr.
NINETY SIX — Joseph “Joe” Williams Gentry Sr., 88, of 5517 Highway 178 South, Ninety Six, widower of Loretta White Gentry, passed away Tuesday, July 30, 2019 at his home.
Born in Comer, GA, he was a son of the late Ernest Clyde and Mary Brooks Gentry. He retired from Lander University as an auto mechanic and was a member of First St. Moriah Baptist Church. Mr. Gentry was a US Marine Corps Veteran of the Korean Conflict and was a recipient of the Purple Heart.
Surviving are his children, JoLynne Thompson (Skeeter) of Greenwood, Joseph Williams Gentry, Jr. (Yvonne) of Williston, Nina Faye Adams (Rusty) of Callison, and Peggy Gentry of the home; sister, Nina Mae Russe (Dale) of San Rafael, CA; brother, Eugene (Betty) of Red Oak, TX; five grandchildren, Taylor Carvajal (Mikey) of Lafayette, IN, J.P. Lamb (Jewel) of Liberty, Chirsa Shealy (Glenn) of Saluda, Spanky Weaghington (Brandi) of Callison, and Ben Adams (Samantha) of Piedmont; seven great-grandchildren; and special companion, his dog, Josie Girl.
Services will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Friday at the Harley Funeral Home Chapel, with the Rev. Bryant Sims and Rev. Tim Wilbanks officiating. Burial, with military honors, will follow at Greenwood Memorial Gardens.
Pallbearers will be Joseph Williams Gentry, Jr., Spanky Weaghington, Ben Adams, J.P. Lamb, Skeeter Thompson, and Rusty Adams.
The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. p.m. on Thursday at the funeral home.
