Joel Don Landers
Dr. Joel Don “Joe” Landers, 73, resident of 110 Eastman Street, husband of Ann Marie Major Landers, passed away Thursday, September 19, 2019, at his home.
Born June 10, 1946, in Simpsonville, he was a son of the late Joel and Vera Parrish Landers.
A 1964 graduate of Greenwood High School, he also held a Bachelor’s of Arts from Tabernacle Bible College, a Master’s in Ministry from Bethany Theological Seminary and a Doctorate of Divinity from Faith Theological Seminary in Anderson. He was a faithful pastor, preacher and teacher for more than 50 years, having served as a Bible professor at Tabernacle Bible College and Greensboro Bible College, serving as a coach of baseball and basketball and as a teacher at Tabernacle Christian School in Greenville and as a principal at Oakwood Christian School in Anderson. A co-founder of Calvary Baptist Church in Greenwood, he was also very active in Christian Missions around the world, especially in Mexico and Scotland. His passion was teaching and sharing his faith and Love for God with all people, all around the world. He was a member of Harris Baptist Church.
Surviving in addition to his wife of the home are two sons, Mark Landers of Bennett, NC, and Jon Michael and wife Kerrie Landers of Wilmington, NC; two grandsons, Alex Landers of Bennett, NC, and Ben Landers of Covington, GA; two brothers, Darrell and wife Lavern Landers of Greenwood, and Danny Landers of Hodges; a sister, Vera “Del” Kelly of Colorado; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a daughter-in-law, Darla Landers.
Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Sunday at Harris Baptist Church, with Rev. Frank Thomas, Rev. Ken Branyon and Chaplain Rick Hendricks officiating. Entombment will be in the Oakbrook Memorial Park Mausoleum Chapel. Pallbearers will be Fred Schlock, Darrell Porterfield, Paul Williams, Jeff Auman, Bobby Brookshire and Steve Price. Honorary escort will be the Men of Harris Baptist Church along with Mike Meredith.
The family will be at the home on Eastman Street and will receive friends at Blyth Funeral Home from 5 to 7 p.m. Saturday evening.
