Janice Young Jernigan

Janice Young Jernigan, resident of Greenwood, widow of Harold Keith Jernigan, Sr., passed away peacefully on her 84th birthday, Thursday, July 25, 2019, at Hospice & Palliative Care of the Piedmont, with her adoring children present.

Born in McCormick in 1935, Mrs. Jernigan was a daughter of the late James Ernest and Mary Ray Beaudrot Young. She was a 1953 graduate of Greenwood High School. She graduated from Winthrop College in 1957 and married the love of her life later that summer. The couple moved to Columbia, SC, where Mrs. Jernigan embarked on a 42-year career as a secondary school educator. She retired from teaching in Fayetteville, NC, where the Jernigans had moved in 1973. Two years after her well-deserved retirement, Mrs. Jernigan returned to her hometown of Greenwood along with her husband.

A member of First Presbyterian Church, Mrs. Jernigan was very active in community and church activities. She was an integral part of the Stephen Ministry of First Presbyterian, a member of the John Knox Sunday School class, and a member of the Golden Age Presbyterians otherwise known as “GAP”. She was a member of several bridge clubs and a book and garden club. She also was very active in the American Legion Auxiliary.

Nothing was more important to Mrs. Jernigan than her family. In addition to hosting annual family reunions every Thanksgiving at the Outer Banks, she would travel far and wide so as to never miss an important moment. Omah will be greatly missed. Surviving are three daughters, Lynne J. (William) Owen of Norfolk, VA, Faye J. (Steve) Traynelis of Atlanta, GA, and Anne J. (Kenny) Abner of Charlotte, NC; a son, Harold Keith (Rebecca) Jernigan Jr. of New Bern, NC; a brother, Dr. Ernie (Nancy) Young of Greenwood; eighteen grandchildren, Alex (Blair) Owen, Conally (Melissa) Owen, Joseph Owen, Kathryn Owen, Joshua Traynelis, Ruth Anne Traynelis, James Traynelis, John Traynelis, Lydia Grace Traynelis, Mary Lynne Traynelis, Wyatt Jernigan, Owen Jernigan, Mary Kathryne Abner, Philip Abner, Jacob Abner, David Abner and Lydia Hope Abner; and two great-grandchildren, Lily Nguyen and Mason Kaleta.

She was predeceased in death by her husband of more than 57 years, by a daughter, Mary Kathryn Jernigan, and by a sister, Jenella Harall Young Buzhardt.

Memorial services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday at First Presbyterian Church, with Rev. Brad Christie officiating. Private family burial services will be conducted at Greenwood Memorial Gardens prior to the service.

The family will receive friends at the church immediately following the memorial service.
