A Ware Shoals man is facing charges after Greenwood police investigated someone breaking into Tidwell Jewelers and stealing rings from a jewelry case.

Joseph Chandler Wood, 19, of 15 Edgewood Drive, Ware Shoals was arrested Friday and charged with first-degree burglary and grand larceny, $5,000 or more.

The first Greenwood police officer on scene at about 11:20 p.m. Thursday saw a man running from a shattered window on the front of Tidwell Jewelers and chased the man as he ran behind the building and was seen on the railroad tracks nearby, a report said.

Officers set up a perimeter and soon an officer had apprehended the man, the report said. He was taken to Self Regional Medical center for treatment of minor cuts he got while trying to flee, meanwhile officers continued searching the area.

Police found a jewelry box along the railroad tracks that held men’s tungsten wedding bands, with more rings lying on the ground. Officers also found the man’s shoe where it got stuck in the mud, and a stocking cap the man was seen wearing on surveillance video, the report said. Officers found more rings scattered on the ground in the path of the man’s escape route from the store.

Cameras at the store showed the man pacing back and forth in front of the store before he removed a hammer from a trash bag he had and hit the glass window on the front of the store, the report said. When he entered the store he broke the glass from the jewelry case containing men’s wedding bands and started putting jewelry in the trash bag before fleeing through the broken window.
