A Union man is facing charges after officers found him carrying contraband while trying to get into Leath Correctional Institution, according to a report.

Eddie Carl Kendrick Jr., 61, of 555 Bishop Road, Union was arrested Friday and charged with possession of ecstasy, possession of other schedule substance I-V and furnishing or possessing contraband in a county, municipal or multijurisdictional jail.

A man went Friday to Leath to visit an inmate, and while being processed at the point of entry for visitors, prison staff told Greenwood County deputies an alarm kept going off and the man kept pushing something into his waistband. An officer went to pat the man down and found a plastic baggy sticking out from his pants that had multi-colored pills in it, the report said.

The man told deputies he was there to visit a friend who asked him to bring the baggy, but he didn’t know what was in it. Officers noted the 22 pills in the bag tested positive for MDMA. While patting the man down, officers found a roll of tape in his underwear that had 18 Suboxone strips on it.
