A Greenwood man stopped by police at a safety checkpoint Sunday night was charged with possession with intent to distribute marijuana, authorities said.

Gregory Antonio Nelson II, 20, of 213 W. Laurel Avenue B., Greenwood, was arrested at 3:30 a.m.

According to an incident report, a Greenwood County deputy detected a strong marijuana odor emanating from a car that was stopped at a state Highway Patrol checkpoint. During a vehicle search, officers found a plastic bag in the rear armrest containing 43 grams of a green leafy substance thought to be marijuana.

The driver, who was alone in the vehicle, said the bag did not belong to him.
