A man was rushed to the hospital with a gunshot wound to his neck early Saturday morning following a shooting in the area of Milwee Avenue.

Just after midnight, Greenwood police were called to a fight in progress on Milwee Avenue, said Greenwood Police Department Public Information Officer Jonathan Link. A crowd was dispersing when officers arrived, and while in the area an officer heard gunshots nearby, then heard more shots being fired as he followed the sounds to investigate.

Police found a man who had an apparent gunshot wound to his neck nearby, Link said. The man was conscious and alert when EMS staff took him to the hospital for treatment. Link said it appeared the man was treated and is stable, but did not know if he had been released from the hospital as of about 9:30 a.m.

A witness at the scene identified the shooter and told police he lived in a nearby apartment, Link said. Police got a search warrant and detained the suspect, finding marijuana and drug paraphernalia in the apartment. The suspect was booked into the Greenwood County Detention Center.

James Davis, 56, was arrested and charged with attempted murder, possession of a weapon during a violent crime and possession with intent to distribute marijuana, Link said. A booking photo was not immediately available.
