Greenwood police say road rage might be the motivation behind a Friday night shooting that happened near the end of a football game between Emerald and Abbeville High School.

“Investigators have been following up on the case, and can say for sure that this incident appears to be the result of road rage. At this time, we do not believe that there was any connection between this shooting incident and an alleged altercation at the football game,” Greenwood Police wrote in a Facebook post Monday night.

It happened at about 9:30 p.m. on Mathis Road, when a 17-year-old male riding with friends back from the game pulled up on another vehicle, firing off several shots.

Greenwood Police spokesman Jonathan Link said Monday night an arrest had yet to be made, but authorities shared information about the confrontation because of questions about the nature of the episode.

“We want to share this information with you because there have been many who have voiced concerns with us, the Sheriff’s Office and the school district over safety at the school sporting events,” police said on Facebook. “Please know that the safety of our children and families at these events is our highest priority.”
