After a nearly four-month delay, the Greenwood Mall shooting trial continues today. A technicality had led a judge to void the grand jury indictments against the six defendants.

Four shots were fired at the Greenwood Mall on July 28, 2018, and the ensuing investigation resulted in the arrest of six men in connection with the shooting. Narkevious Reid, Shyheim Freeman, Shyheim Alston, Shyheim Reed, Isaiah Whatley and Antonio Williams were each charged in connection with the shooting, and all appeared before Circuit Court Judge Eugene Griffith in late July.

Griffith oversaw a two-day, meticulous jury selection process in the case, but on the third day before the selected jurors could take their seats for opening arguments, one of the defense attorneys filed a motion to quash the May 3 indictments against the men. The motion cited a state Supreme Court case that attorney Charles Grose read as intending to stop the practice of using a state prosecutor or other state officer as the sole witness before a grand jury. In this case, Grose said the officer who testified before the grand jury was not the officer listed on the defendants’ indictments, which Grose’s motion said violates state law.

Griffith approved the motion, voiding the 18 indictments against the men and requiring the 8th Circuit Solicitor’s Office to reindict them before the case could return to trial. On Thursday, Solicitor David Stumbo said the case was coming up for trial again this morning.

The six men charged in this case are each facing different charges:

  • Antonio Lafayette Williams Jr., 24, of Greenwood, charged with attempted murder and simple possession of marijuana, declined a bond hearing.
  • Narkevious Reid, 22, of Greenwood, charged with attempted murder and possession of a weapon during a violent crime, $40,000 bond.
  • Shyheim Freeman, 24, of Greenwood, attempted murder and possession of a weapon during a violent crime, $30,000 bond.
  • Shyheim Alston, 24, of Greenville, attempted murder and possession of a weapon during a violent crime, $30,000 bond.
  • Shyheim Reed, 23, of Greenwood, attempted murder and possession of a weapon during a violent crime, $25,000 bond.
  • Isaiah Whatley, 18, of Greenwood, attempted murder and possession of a weapon during a violent crime, $15,000 bond.
