NINETY SIX — A kitchen fire destroyed part of the Hardee’s in Ninety Six on Monday, but no one in the restaurant was injured.

The fire appeared to start in the restaurant’s broiler, said Greenwood County Fire Coordinator Steve Holmes. The fire suppression system installed there went off, but didn’t put out the flames, Holmes said.

Instead, the fire rose through the system and into the attic, where the flames continued to burn and spread.

“Nearly everything behind the counter is ruined,” Holmes said.

The store will remain closed while crews assess and repair the damage.

The Hardee’s district manager was on scene and said the employees were unharmed. She said arrangements were being made to get employees hours at other area Hardee’s restaurants, but some employees walked to work and lacked transportation to make it to the other locations.

County firefighters from multiple stations responded to the blaze, along with county EMS staff and Ninety Six police.
