Safe haven law

An infant born Wednesday in Greenwood was given up to a Greenwood County Emergency Medical Services employee under the safe haven law later that day.

According to the department, the boy weighs 5 pounds and is 18.9 inches long. A permanency planning hearing is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. Sept. 9 at the Greenwood County Courthouse.

The child is now in the custody of the state Department of Social Services.

Called Daniel’s Law for a boy who survived being buried in a landfill shortly after birth, the state’s Safe Haven for Abandoned Babies Act allows parents to surrender a child up to 60 days old to authorities so infants can be safely adopted out.
