A driver has died after his vehicle collided with a school bus in Gray Court Monday afternoon.
Herman Alexander Black, 55, of 503 Wilkie Road, Woodruff died of his injuries at the scene, Laurens County Deputy Coroner Patti Canupp said.
The school bus was traveling south on S.C. Highway 101 at about 4:35 p.m. when it crossed the centerline and struck Black’s 1981 Ford Fairmont head-on, according to master trooper David Jones of the state Highway Patrol.
The driver of the school bus was taken to Greenville Memorial Hospital with minor injuries. Neither vehicle had any passengers. The school bus belonged to Laurens County School District 55.
“We are greatly distressed by the loss of life resulting from this accident and we wish to offer our heartfelt condolences to the family of the deceased,” Superintendent Stephen Peters said in a press release. “We strive to operate our buses as safely as possible and will do all we can to learn from this experience.”
District spokesperson Ed Murray added: “We will learn what we can from this distressing event and incorporate those lessons in refining our practices and training our drivers as effectively as possible.”
The district declined to comment further on the wreck, citing the ongoing investigation.
