Winning can spoil people in sports. Rarely do teams or players repeat as champion because that previous championship satisfies them. Often, athletes start the next season slow and can never reach their top form from the previous year. Winning did not spoil Gage Cervenka, nor did it satisfy the Emerald High School sophomore wrestler.
Cervenka won the Class AA-A heavyweight state championship last year, becoming the state's first freshman to earn a heavyweight crown. He then went on to add a national championship to his list of accolades. But those accomplishments were merely rungs on a ladder for Cervenka. He has his eyes on history. "I want to be a four-timer," Cervenka said. "There's just a handful of guys who have won four state championships in a row. I'll definitely be the first heavyweight to win four."
