Having the right mindset
Emerald's Cervenka looks at 2012-13 one match at a time
Gage Cervenka has quite a task: not to be satisfied with winning just one state high school and national championship in wrestling.
There could be worse things to be concerned about.
But after the Emerald High School star became the first freshman in state history last season to win the state high school heavyweight title, his expectations for this year were already intensified. And after he won a national title during the summer, the Vikings sophomore proved he knows all the maneuvers.
Now, it's just a matter of fine-tuning them and garnering enough major interest to land a college scholarship.
And, of course, win three more state and national championships.
"I'm not really thinking about winning state or nationals right now," said Cervenka. "I'm just looking at things match by match. I want to go as hard as I can. Yeah, last year, I won state. But that means nothing, now."
All that matters to Cervenka is becoming an improved leader - as a sophomore, no less.
