A CUT ABOVE

Eric Bell gets a face rub after having his hair and beard trimmed by Patricia Partlow. Partlow said some of her clients fall asleep during these rubs, and it is a big compliment to her because it shows the trust the client has for her and for her work. (Matt Walsh | Index-Journal)

Partlow and 5 Star Cutz about more than just a trim and shave

NINETY SIX - When Ninety Six native Patricia Partlow decided to open her own barbershop in town, she had a specific vision.
She remembers going to a Greenwood barbershop with her father every Saturday as a child and watched him get a cut and razor shave. It had a family friendly atmosphere where the barber took time to get to know his clients.
"Sometimes, he didn't go for a haircut," Partlow said. "He just went to talk."
Like that barbershop from her childhood, Partlow wants her place - 5 Star Cutz - to be somewhere her clients feel comfortable, can make friends and get an old-fashioned razor shave.
She also wants a shop that is traditional and respected, a throwback to the days where barbers were trained as surgeons. She said they were asked to perform baptisms and even had to sign off on a surgeon's diploma.
"The best thing is when a client sits down and you start to work on them and they go to sleep," she said. "That says I trust you, and there's no other feeling."
Partlow opened 5 Star Cutz in Ninety Six in June 2011. She works with two other barbers, Gary Reeder, a co-owner, and Neal Hawkins.
