You just might find a favorite new song, or performer, if you check out “HomeGrown 2019: Songwriter’s Showcase” at 8 p.m. Jan. 12 at Abbeville Opera House.
It’s a night of original music by local songwriters, all performing on stage at the Abbeville Opera House, as part of the City Events Season.
More than a dozen songwriters are scheduled to perform so far, according to event organizers, Eric Delgado and Rachel Davis, both performers in their own right, who are also part of the trio Unified Lights, with Paul Hamilton.
Davis also sings with the cover band, The Leftovers and with the alternative country band The Campfire Revival.
Proceeds from this showcase help support Opera House City Events Schedule and Busy Bees Preschool of Abbeville Presbyterian Church.
“We wanted to bring everybody in the local music community together,” Delgado said. “While some in the local music scene are into performing cover songs, a number also write original music. We have reached out to people who write their own songs.
“For the most part, it’s going to be acoustic or whatever performers can carry on stage and carry off. We want this to be a success so we can do it again.”
Davis said this event is meant to be inclusive.
“They can showcase their art and be appreciated for it,” she said. “Songwriters sharing their songs is like sharing their heart and soul.”
Of those confirmed to date, the number of female to male performers is about equal.
“That is a big deal,” Davis said. “The Greenwood music scene is pretty much all dudes. I’m super excited that so many women are part of this. Plus, we have everything from teenagers to adults signed up. I like that the women are stepping up. We are thrilled to be a part of this and it might introduce some people to the Opera House. It’s such a neat space.”
Davis said she has been singing for a long time, but only dabbled in songwriting while in college and recently started again.
“It’s a lot harder to sell yourself to an audience, than it is to be a jukebox,” Delgado said, of people who perform original music versus only cover songs.
