CARREL RICHARDS
CARREL RICHARDS
Before this year, Carrel Richards never threw a javelin.
But, when he and his Emerald City Elite AAU track coach, and mother, Kita Richards were looking at events for the 11-year-old Pinecrest Elementary student, they thought the javelin throw could be a potential option. Carrel Richards played quarterback for his football team this fall, so Kita Richards thought her son would also be able to throw the javelin.
And right she was.

Carrel Richards immediately showed promise as a javelin thrower, and he fulfilled some of that potential on Saturday. Richards hurled his javelin 76.09 feet at the AAU Junior Olympics District Qualifier in Hopkins to set the South Carolina AAU record and win first place.
"It was exciting," Carrel Richards said. "I knew I was going to take first place after my first two throws, but I didn't know I was going to set a record.
"The record thing was a surprise."
