The McCormick County School District announced in a press release Sunday night the head football coach position at McCormick High School is officially open.
McCormick is searching for a full-time replacement for former coach Brian Neal, who led the program to a 2012 Class A, Division II state championship game appearance before leaving to become coach at Aiken in June. The school will be taking applications until Feb. 10.
McCormick was led to a 5-7 record last year under interim coach Bryan Buffkin.
"McCormick High School would like to express their appreciation to coach Buffkin for the job that he did this past football season," the press release stated. "He was put in a unique situation and agreed to take control of the football program in a time of need. We have decided to open the position up for the opportunity to find the best football coach for our players, our school and our community."
McCormick conducted a coaching search last summer after Neal left, only to have a submitted name shot down by the board of education by a 2-2 split vote. After that failed, the school turned to Buffkin, who served as offensive coordinator on the 2012 Upper State championship team.
