Even while his collegiate career as a pitcher for the Erskine College baseball team was still in progress, Matt Baker understood there was little chance of his career continuing as a player after college.
He knew he needed to find something else he loved to do. It just so happens what he found kept him on the baseball field.


Just in a different way.
Baker is in his seventh year as an assistant with the Greenwood High School coaching staff, where he serves as pitching coach.
“I knew I wanted to teach, and I see coaching as teaching,” said Baker, 29, who teaches Social Studies at Brewer Middle School. “That’s something I knew I wanted to do when I knew I couldn’t play baseball any further. I knew I wanted to still be around the game, so it was always in the back of my mind. It was just learning and getting to the point where I was able to get the opportunity.”
