Culbreath leaves coaching behind

Mike Culbreath has a change of plans this fall.
After coaching the Abbeville High School girls tennis team for six years, and the girls basketball team at Wright Middle School for five, he retired from both teaching and coaching after this past school year.
These days, Culbreath said he will drive the general school bus for both the Abbeville County School District and Greenwood Family YMCA.
“I’m a little antsy,” said Culbreath, who has actually driven a bus for Abbeville’s school district since 2005. “I’m working part-time, and I’m hoping to find a long-term job with the Connie Maxwell Children’s Home. I worked at John de la Howe (School) for 15 years before coming to (the Abbeville School District). I like that kind of work and talked with the people over there. But, a lot of the guys I worked with at (John de la Howe) are now at Connie Maxwell. I’m just hoping for the right position to open up for me, there.”
When Culbreath took over as Abbeville’s girls tennis coach, that also appeared to be a right position for him. His Panthers won a region title in 2012 and reached last season’s Upper State final.
