After guiding the Erskine College men’s volleyball team from its birth to Conference Carolinas champions in just two years, coach Derek Schmitt is leaving.
Schmitt accepted a job to be the assistant men’s coach at California Baptist, which plays in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation, the best men’s volleyball conference in the nation.
“It’s a really good opportunity for me to get into the MPSF,” Schmitt said. “It was not an easy decision because of the success we had and the guys we had at Erskine. But, it’s just a really good opportunity for me and a real good transition opportunity for my family, as well.
“I just really had to make the best decision for my family.”
Cal Baptist struggled last season, finishing 4-24 overall while dealing with injuries and a big player turnover. But, the team was ranked in the Top 10 in the nation two years ago and competes in a conference that boasted 10 nationally ranked teams in the top 15 at the end of last season.
