Lander University women's tennis coach Brett Simpson thought his team had a chance at being nationally ranked for the first time this week.
Therefore, he was surprised in one way.
But in another way, he was not.
After it was revealed his Bearcats are ranked 40th (Erskine is 42nd) in the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association NCAA Division II poll. and Lander tied a regional-high ranking of sixth in the Southeast, Simpson said he hopes it's something his program can keep building on.

At the end of last season, the Bearcats players immediately wanted to improve after finishing 9-11. So far, this season's Lander squad has already equaled last season's win total at 9-4. That includes wins against Clayton State, No. 41 Francis Marion and No. 43 GRU Augusta.
