Got plans for this weekend? We sure hope so, beginning with a kickoff on Thursday.
In case you missed it, there’s a bit of a festival going on in Greenwood County. The 47th annual Festival of Flowers is well underway, but this, what is billed as the “main weekend,” will be about the most event-packed. It begins Thursday with the Uptown Live “Show Your Flower Power” concert that will tie in with the Lander Bearcat Topiary Team Fan Day. And it literally takes off from there -- at least on Saturday it takes off.
Friday, before or after work, you have several choices. Or you can squeeze in a little of all. There is the Junior Open Tennis Tournament in the morning and the Arts and Crafts Show, which will run all day Friday and Saturday at the Piedmont Tech College Event Center. We hope a good number of you will join us, the Index-Journal, for a sampling of wines while making your way in and out of the many participating stores on the Topiaries and Tastings wine walk. Oh, and be sure to do a bit of local shopping as you sample nice wines and view the topiaries. It’s sure to be a fun event, beginning at 5:30. That’s p.m., by the way.

Next up is Saturday, when the weekend will indeed literally take off. You have another day to take in the Arts and Crafts Show, but you also can enjoy time with the kids and grandkids out at Greenwood County Airport. There, radio-controlled airplanes will take to the skies. Kids also will be treated to flights in real airplanes. There will be folks jumping out of airplanes, airplanes performing aerobatics and much, much more during the Aviation Expo and Air Show. The Kidfest, which in the past had taken place in Uptown Greenwood, has been relocated to the airport. Good idea, since both are extremely kid-friendly events. There will be plenty of fun there as well. And, of course, there are garden tours spread throughout the area.
And you outdoor enthusiasts have more events to watch. Perhaps you’re a participant, too. There’s the Bee Buzzin’ Bike Tour and a 5K Run and 1-mile Fun Run/Walk. And if music is more your thing, you can -- if tickets are still available -- take in the “Sound of Music” production at Greenwood Community Theatre this weekend (or next). Plus, there’s the ever-popular bluegrass concert Uptown on Saturday night. This is another event that’s moved. It will take place on Oregon Avenue. Don’t worry. Traffic won’t be coming through.
So there you have it. There’s been plenty going on during the month, but the Festival of Flowers culminates this weekend. Don’t miss it.
