On the morning of Sept. 11, 2001, I woke up and did what I did every morning at that time: Went to the computer and checked the message boards at www.chud.com.
At the time, I was going to Lander University and living at home with my mom and dad. My first class that day was not until about 11 a.m., so I slept in. As was my habit -- remember, there were no smartphones at that point -- I shuffled to the computer to check out what was then my favorite website.

School is back in, football started and Labor Day is in the rearview mirror.

As my senior year drew to a close, the graduating members of the Abbeville High School Class of 1997 gathered on the home bleachers at Hite Stadium for a class photo.
We stood in our caps and gowns and smiled as a professional photographer snapped photos and captured images we would later be able to purchase. Soon, the photographer was done, but the graduates were not.
There were still other photos to be taken, and Press and Banner reporter Henry E. Green would be the one to take them. I still remember our class gave Henry a “Bronx cheer” as he stepped up on a bench to take his photos for the paper.

    We’ve waited, patiently.
It’s been long enough. Thankfully, blissfully, mercifully, the best time of the year is finally upon us.
It’s football season. Thank the Lord.
High school games have begun and NFL squads are going through their exhibition season. But, more importantly to many in the South, college football is nearly at hand.
For local college fans, it’s set to be one hell of a Labor Day weekend. Things kick off Thursday evening in Columbia, as No. 9 South Carolina takes on No. 21 Texas A&M. In South Carolina, we’re football crazy. But in Texas, well, they are football obsessed.

By now, just about everyone has shared their thoughts on the death of comedian and actor Robin Williams.
    Well, now it’s my turn.
As you are undoubtedly aware, Williams committed suicide Monday at his home in Northern California. He was 63.
There is little I can say about the circumstances of the actor’s death that hasn’t been covered by writers who are much more graceful and talented than me. Simply put, Robin Williams had demons.

Greenwood has some restaurants. You have to admit that. If we don’t have anything else, by God, we’ve got restaurants.

Almost a decade ago, several good friends and I made a plan.
A long-range plan. A really long-range plan. One that, if we stick to it, will end up taking us 30 years to complete.

Her obituary said she was a seamstress. To us, she was more like family.
Last Monday, a dear friend passed on. Her name was Aurea “Caridad” Capdevila. In our family, we called her Mima.

Unpacking boxes is an incredibly tedious task.
My family and I recently moved, and the process of preparing for the move, moving and then unpacking all of our stuff has been interesting, to say the least.

It’s amazing how much difference 10 months can make, especially for a kid.
My 5-year-old daughter, Charley, grew an inch or two in the last 10 months

We love a festival, don’t we?
It’s one of the things that makes the Lakelands special. We don’t have everything here in our little corner of the world. This isn’t a metropolitan area, in any sense of the word.
But, we do like to party.

Remember when going to the movies was special? I do.
Now, don’t get me wrong, I still love going out to the movies. In fact, it’s just about my favorite thing to do.

Well, it looks like the cat is out of the bag. The car has left the garage. The horse is out of the barn. The Index-Journal sports staff has left the bar.
Just kidding. Sports reporters never leave the bar. Well, they leave to cover games. Then they go back to the bar.

As you are probably aware, today is Father’s Day. Many of you likely got a gift for your father, or at the very least got him a card.
If you didn’t get him a card, well, Walgreen’s is open. But the selection is probably pretty picked over by now. All they’ll have left is Garfield cards in Spanish. That said, if your father is a Hispanic Garfield fan it might be your lucky day.

Exactly a week ago, I went to the Self Regional Healthcare Cancer Center to do a story on Cancer Survivors Day, the hospital’s annual event designed to celebrate individuals and families who have battled the dreaded disease.
