NINETY SIX - Alice Mae Lites Thomas, 85, of 119 Porter Drive, widow of Benson "Bobby" Thomas departed this life Sunday, November 17, 2013. Born in Greenwood County, she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Beatrice Lites. She was a graduate of Brewer High School and received her Bachelor's in Elementary Education and Music from Allen University in Columbia, SC. She started her teaching career in McCormick County schools and retired after 36 years of teaching in the Ninety Six schools. She was also a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc. and Greenwood County Retired Teachers Association. Until her health declined, she was a devoted pianist and was the musician for several churches throughout the years, including Pine Pleasant Baptist Church, Pleasant Rock Baptist Church and Mt. Olive Baptist Church. She also enjoyed gardening, canning and will be remembered for her culinary skills.
She was preceded in death by her husband Benson "Bobby" Thomas; son Benson Jerry Thomas; and three sisters, Lela Payne, Wilhelmina Phillips and Annie Lee Watson. Survivors include three children, Barbara (Earl) Welch, Joseph (Teresa) Thomas and Elfredia (Terry) Lark, all of Ninety Six; SC, one sister, Jessie Bonds and a daughter-in-law, Cathy Thomas of Greenwood, SC; and brothers-in-law, Dr. George (Mary) B. Thomas of Rockville, MD, and John Phillips of Elyria, OH. The family will be forever grateful to a special caretaker, Geraldine Lewis of Ninety Six, SC. Also surviving are seven grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, a host of nieces and nephews, cousins, additional relatives and friends to cherish her memories.
Services are 1 p.m. on Friday, November 22, 2013 at Mt. Olive Baptist Church, conducted by Rev. Adrian Wideman. The body will be placed in the church at noon. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family is at the home of her son, Joseph (Teresa) Thomas, 124 Panther Drive in Ninety Six. Online condolences may be sent to robson@nctv.com.
