A gas station on the southern outskirts of Ware Shoals had its late-morning rush interrupted by a masked gunman demanding money Wednesday, and Ware Shoals police are now investigating the armed robbery.
Several units from the Greenwood County Sheriff's Office descended upon the Citgo situated along U.S. Route 25 North moments after the robbery, which officials said occurred about 9:30 a.m. The GCSO is assisting the Ware Shoals Police Department in the investigation. No one has yet been arrested in connection with the incident.
According to WSPD officials, a masked man entered the store armed with a pistol and demanded the store clerk hand over the cash register. The woman told the suspect she was going to retrieve a trash bag to sack the money for him, and was able to run out of the store and escape to a neighboring Burger King where she found someone to call police.
Police believe the man ran to the back of the building and sped away from the scene in a white Chevrolet Suburban SUV. Investigators recovered some of the stolen money the suspect dropped in the parking lot as he fled the gas station, and state Law Enforcement Division is expected to analyze the bills for clues.
Ware Shoals Police Chief Harry Irick said the suspect is believed to be a 5-foot, 8-inch black man with short hair and a thin mustache.
