Nicole Varnum was promoted to the senior management position of controller of the Index-Journal, effective immediately. Judith M. Burns, Index-Journal publisher, made the announcement. Varnum first joined the company in 2011 as business and accounting manager.
In her position as controller, Varnum will guide the financial decisions for all departments of the company, including budgeting and establishing, monitoring and enforcing internal controls and analyzing financial data. She will continue her duties in business and accounting, and will report to the publisher.
“From the first day Nicole joined us at the Index-Journal, she began to take positive steps to streamline our business office for effectiveness and productivity,” Burns said. “She also has gone above the call of duty to make contributions in all departments. She has quickly grasped the concepts of the newspaper industry, and is a very valuable member of our senior management team. She is a joy to work with.”
Varnum, a Ware Shoals native, is a graduate of Lander University with a bachelor's degree in business administration. She also earned a Masters of Science in management at Southern Wesleyan University. She lives in Greenwood.
