A pair of suspects were charged this week after being linked to a ring of thefts from area storage units.
Bobbie Buchanan, 26, of 1231 Ninety Six Highway, Greenwood, and Henry Buchanan, 32, 458 S.C. Highway 34, Ninety Six, each face five counts of third-degree burglary, five counts of malicious injury to personal property, four counts of petit larceny, and a charge of grand larceny in connection with the incidents.
Investigators at the Greenwood County Sheriff's Office said the suspects were taken into custody Tuesday night, at which point Bobbie Buchanan was charged with possession of stolen goods. It was unclear what Henry Buchanan's initial charge was. Officials said sources implicated the pair in the string of thefts. According to a Greenwood County incident report:
The span of the five thefts extends back to June 7 and culminated on July 9 at two Greenwood storage firms. Carolina Real Estate and Self Storage of Greenwood and Calhoun Self Storage. Officials estimated they recovered up to $18,000 worth of merchandise stolen from units at the two storage complexes.
Some of the items reported stolen from the units included an antique dresser, bedroom set, a microwave, stereo, a set of Samurai swords, a Harley Davidson bicycle, a television, a surround sound speaker system and pair of standup tool boxes valued at more than $5,000. Several victims told investigators the thieves rummaged through financial documents in the storage bins as well, though none of the papers were stolen.
The pair face up to 35 years in prison if convicted of all the charges they face. A magistrate judge set both suspects' bonds at $52,040 cash or surety Friday at the Greenwood County Courthouse. The suspects are scheduled to appear in court Sept. 27.
