A Greenwood man faces multiple charges following an encounter with police late Saturday night in which officers found drugs.
John Covington, 26, of 503 Taggart St., was charged with possession with intent to distribute crack cocaine, simple possession of marijuana, resisting arrest and failure to stop on lawful command in connection with the incident.
Greenwood police were patrolling the area near Kings Court about 11:30 p.m. Saturday when they spotted the suspect. Officers stopped the man, whom they had prior dealings with in reference to drug activity.
According to a Greenwood police report:

While talking to the suspect, officers noticed a bulge in his pockets which, upon patting him down, appeared to be cash and two plastic bags containing an unknown substance.
When officers attempted to cuff the man, he jerked from their grasp and fled the scene on foot. Police caught him a short time later, and a struggle ensued as he continued to resist arrest. Officers used a taser on the man during the struggle and struck him three times in the back to gain control of him.
Police found 6.66 grams of crack cocaine and 1.8 grams of suspected marijuana at the scene, and $232 in cash in the suspect's pocket. He told officers he'd just purchased the crack cocaine in order to make some quick money to provide for his two children.
