A jilted lover was arrested during the weekend after reports of shots being fired outside a Ninety Six church.
William Smith, 42, of 400 N. Emerald Road, Greenwood, was charged with breach of peace aggravated in nature, malicious damage to property and unlawful possession of a firearm/ammunition by a person convicted of violent offense in connection with the incident.
The victim told officers while she was attending service at a church on Louden Road in Ninety Six late Friday afternoon, she heard the sound of gunshots being fired outside. She said when she went outside, she saw a masked man fleeing and jump into a green vehicle that sped westbound from the scene. According to a Greenwood County incident report:
The woman told officers someone fired three shots into the driver's side door of her car. Officers were notified a short time later of a crash that occurred nearby involving a vehicle that matched the description the victim gave.
After investigating the crash scene, deputies determined the suspect was involved in the shooting on Louden Road. When questioned as to why he shot the woman's car up, the man told officers, "I was upset because she left me and hung me with all the bills."
Officers recovered a pair of black gloves and a Mossberg shotgun at the scene of the man's arrest.
