A Greenwood mother was arrested Monday following reports she abandoned her daughter.
Grace London, 46, of 206 Fuller St., was charged with unlawful neglect to a child in connection with the incident.
Greenwood County deputies first encountered the incident earlier this month when one of the suspect's acquaintances, who said the mother dropped the victim off at her house in December. According to a Greenwood County incident report:
The acquaintance, who resided on Cobb Road, told officers the suspect said, "If you don't take her, she will be homeless." The woman said she allowed the 16-year-old daughter to live with her since then because she did not want the girl to be homeless, though she noted she did not have custody of the child.
The woman said she found the girl at an unknown address along Hackett Street in Greenwood, and officers encountered the teen there. The victim said she could not live with her mother because of issues with her stepfather. She said the suspect dropped her and her belongings off at the Cobb Road residence as if she was abandoning her there. Officers then returned the child to her mother's care.
Deputies contacted the teen's probation officer the following day, and the agent said the mother was supposed to keep the child in her custody. Officers contacted the suspect April 3 and found that the child was living at a family member's apartment, not in the mother's custody.
Officers obtained arrest warrants and apprehended the woman during an appointment between the probation agent and the mother-daughter tandem Monday afternoon. Authorities transported the teen to a group home in Aiken.
