Police are investigating an early morning drive-by shooting near a Greenwood apartment complex that left one man wounded with a gunshot to the chest.
Officers responded to the residence just off New Market Street near East Cambridge Avenue about 12:45 a.m. Friday. According to a city police report:
Five men were standing on the sidewalk along Glenhaven Circle in front of the New Haven apartment complex when, according to witnesses, four or five gunshots rang out.
Several witnesses told officers a vehicle emerged from the back of the apartment complex and was traveling toward New Market Street at the time of the shooting. They described the vehicle as a gray or silver Chevrolet, and said a gunman leaned out of one of the car's windows and began firing rounds at the group of men.
The men were standing behind a 1999 Mercury Grand Marquis parked at the scene. Officers found two bullet holes in the vehicle. Investigators also found a bullet hole in the window frame of a nearby residence and four .357-caliber shell casings near the shooting.
Officers questioned the victim at Self Regional Medical Center. The man suffered a gunshot wound to the right side of his chest, just under his armpit. Nurses at Self Regional told officers the bullet did not hit any vital organs and appeared to be lodged somewhere in his back.
The victim told officers he did not know anyone who was angry with him or had reason to target him.
