In 2012, Derek Kinney took on a new role with the county, as he was appointed director of Greenwood County EMS.
As 2013 begins, the EMS veteran now is tasked with embracing additional duties with the county.
Last week, Greenwood County Council announced Kinney was appointed as the county's director of emergency services. In that role, Kinney will oversee EMS, emergency management, fire coordination and the radio shop.County manager Toby Chappell noted the radio shop is not the E-911 emergency dispatch center, but rather a one-person operation that works on the county's public safety radios and associated equipment.
Chappell said he is pleased Kinney accepted his new role and said he thinks the county EMS veteran will be successful.
"He has the background, over 20 years in public safety, to be solid in his assessment of situations and the passion to continue to seek improvements in Greenwood County," Chappell said. "His combination of experience, established relationships in the public safety community and desire for continual improvement is the reason that he is the right person for the position.
