The early morning quiet of an Iva home was split by multiple gunshots Friday and an Iva man is in custody in connection with the death of Charles Grogan, 77, of Iva as well as the attempted murder of Grogan’s wife Heidi Grogan.
According to Abbeville County Sheriff Ray Watson, a Duffy Charles Grogan, 24, was arrested about11 a.m. in connection with the 2 a.m. shooting. While Charles Grogan is the father to Duffy Grogan, Watson said the relationship between Heidi Grogan and Duffy Grogan was not immediately clear.
“We believe it’s his stepmother,” Watson said.
Despite the severity of the alleged attack, neither the two victims nor the suspect have any history of similar activity.
“All three of them lived the same house,” Watson said. “There’s not much, if any, of a history of domestic violence for any of the parties.”
Duffy Grogan faces charges of murder in the death of Charles Grogan, attempted murder in the shooting of Heidi Grogan and possession of a weapon during the commission of a violent crime.
“We’ve recovered numerous firearms,” Watson said of Duffy Grogan’s arrest. “We won’t know exactly which one until the autopsy is performed but we do have some recovered projectiles.”The recovered projectiles point to a likely .38 caliber weapon.
Abbeville County Deputy Coroner Sam Ferguson said Heidi Grogan was in Greenville Hospital while Charles Grogan died at the scene. An autopsy is scheduled for Sunday.
Watson said Duffy Grogan would have a bond hearing Friday afternoon and the bond was likely to be denied.
The investigation is ongoing by the Abbeville County Sheriff’s Office, South Carolina Law Enforcement Division and the Abbeville County Coroner.
