A west Greenwood woman was arrested Thursday amid allegations of child abuse.
Mary Bowie, 25, of 1091 Parkland Place Road, was charged with unlawful conduct toward a child in connection with the incident.
The Greenwood Police Department received reports about the alleged abuse earlier this month, after a family member found bruises on the suspect's 4-year-old daughter.
According to a city police report, officers investigated the allegations and found four 2-inch long scratches on the girl's lower back and a circular burn mark on her right buttocks, about a centimeter in diameter. The child told officers the marks came as a result of her mother spanking her and burning her with a cigarette lighter. The victim's grandmother told officers the suspect said she spanked the girl and another child after she found them performing acts that appeared to be sexual in nature on their toys. Officers noted the burn mark appeared to have been caused by a cigarette and not a lighter, based on the circular pattern of the scar.
