No one was injured during an officer-involved shootout late Thursday at an apartment complex just off East Laurel Avenue in Greenwood.
Demekia Martin, 17, of 304 Briggs Ave., Greenwood, was arrested and charged with two counts of attempted murder in connection with the incident.
According to a press release from the Greenwood County Sheriff's Office, two agents with the county's Drug Enforcement Unit - a multi-jurisdictional narcotics task force made up of Greenwood County deputies and Greenwood police officers - responded to the suspect's home about 10 p.m. Thursday following a complaint about drug activity there. When agents arrived on the scene, one person fled the home on foot and the suspect fired an undetermined number of gunshots at the agents. One of the narcotics officers returned fire.
"We are lucky our officers are uninjured and able to return home to their families safely," Greenwood County Sheriff Tony Davis said. "Too often this type of incident ends deadly."
According to a Greenwood police report, backup officers arrived and entered the apartment from which the suspect fired his shots. Agents found two women and an infant sitting on a couch inside. The baby was immediately removed from the apartment and handed over to a family member as officers investigated the scene.
The State Law Enforcement Division was called in to investigate the incident, as is protocol with all officer-involved shootings. GCSO officials are not releasing the name of either agent involved in the shooting because of the ongoing SLED investigation.
The suspect was apprehended at the scene and taken into custody. One juvenile subject was detained at the scene as well, but officers subsequently cleared and released him.
